Look and feel

Feel. Capti distinguishes between your listening position and viewing position in the text. The listening position is what you hear. The viewing position is what you see. If Speech tracking is set to "Track spoken word" the viewing and listening position will be the same, and Capti will automatically scroll text and highlight the word being read. If set to "Do not track" then automatic scrolling will be disabled and you will be able to listen to one part of the track while viewing another.

Look. You can change color theme, font, and width of the text you are viewing. You can also zoom in/out with buttons in the bottom-right corner of the screen. When you zoom in/out, the font size will change but the text will not reflow (unless the window is too narrow). If you want more room for text, you can also close the sidebar.

Text to Speech

Will the voices I purchase in Capti work on other devices?

Voices your purchased on iOS will work on all your iOS devices. Voices you purchased on Mac will work on all your Macs. Voices you purchased on Windows will work on all your Windows devices.

Playback (speech synthesis) is not working

If you are using online version of Capti in the Firefox browser you need to make sure speech synthesis is enabled, as follows:

  • In the Firefox address bar, type in “about:config” and press “Enter”.
  • Click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button.
  • Enter “media.webspeech.synth.enabled” in the search bar and press “Enter”.
  • If "media.webspeech.synth.enabled" is set to false, double click the line to set the value to true.
  • Restart the browser

Playback (speech synthesis) stopped working

  • If you are using a trial version of Capti voice your trial period might have ended. You can keep using this voice by purchasing it from the Voices view.
  • If you deleted the voice you were using, you can restore it from the Voices → More Voices view.
  • You may have changed your preferred voice in the Voices view.

Playback (speech synthesis) keeps working after I close Capti browser tab

In some cases (e.g. in Safari browser on macOS) in order to stop playback completely you have to stop it in Capti before closing the Capti browser tab.

Playback (speech synthesis) is of low quality

  • If you are using Capti on iPhone, iPad, or standalone version of Capti on Windows or Mac then you can download high-quality synthetic voices. On iPhone / iPad find the language you are interested in the "Voices" screen and tap the "More…" list item. On Windows / Mac go to Voices → More Voices.
  • If you are using Capti website then open the "Voices" tab and look for voices that flagged as "Web": those are premium quality voices that will sound much better than the ones installed on your computer. Unfortunately, those voices may not be available to you, in which case you can install the standalone version of Capti on your computer and then install one of our premium quality voices by going to Voices → More Voices tab.

I cannot find a voice I purchased

  • If you are using Capti on iPhone or iPad and you recently reinstalled Capti, then you need to restore your old purchases. Go to Voices → More Voices and tap "Restore". Now you can download all your voices.
  • If you purchased the voice in question on a different operating system you will not be able to use it. For example, a voice purchased on a Windows computer will only work on other Windows computers. See "Can I use a purchased voice on my other devices?" for more details.
  • You need to install Capti on your computer to use the installable Capti voices. If you access Capti playlist by logging into www.captivoice.com then the installable voices will not be available.

Adding Content

How do I add content to Capti?

Open list of tracks and click the large green "+" button. On Windows / Mac it is located in the top-right corner of the sidebar. On iPhone / iPad it is located in the bottom of the screen.

Will the content I add to Capti be accessible on other devices?

Yes! You can synchronize all your playlists to Capti Cloud and then access it on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and simply by logging into your account on www.captivoice.com. To synchronize on iPhone / iPad simply pull down the playlist. To synchronize on Windows / Mac click the small icon in the corner of the sidebar. As long as you synchronize your content is never lost even if you loose your device!

I can not log in to a cloud service or use a cloud service

  • Instapaper requires paid subscription for third party access. You can find out more on the official website.
  • Bookshare is a restricted service for people with print disabilities. You can find out more about qualifications on the official website.

Why am I required to re login into Instapaper (etc.) every time?

Instapaper terms of service require us to ask you for your password every time. Sorry!

How do I add content from iCloud, Pocket, Baidu, Box, etc.?

  • If you are using iPhone or iPad: soon we will provide integration with any cloud service app you install on your device (as long as that app follows Apple's guidelines for app integration).
  • Pocket is not available in Capti for Windows / Mac for technical reasons.

How do I add content from iBooks?

  • Find out the location of your iTunes Media Folder on your Windows / Mac: iTunes, go to Preferences, open "Advanced" tab and locate "iTunes Media Folder". Remember it, or write it down.
  • Connect your device to iTunes and select it.
  • Find and select Capti in the “Apps” section of your device.
  • Press the “Add…” button.
  • Navigate to the "iTunes Media Folder" you found earlier, open the “Books” folder and select the books you want to add to Capti.
  • Once iTunes finishes copying the files to your device you will be able to find them in Capti.

A document I want to add to Capti is not listed when I open cloud service

  • In most cases, Capti will not list documents and files that it cannot load
  • To have Capti list a document shared with you by another Google Drive user, first open Google Drive, right-click the document, and choose "Add to My Drive". Now you should see it in Capti.

A document is not loading into the Playlist

  • Make sure you have enough space on your device. On iPhone / iPad you can see how much space you have left if you open the "Settings" app and go to General > Storage & iCloud Storage.
  • Make sure the file is not DRM-protected. Capti cannot read DRM-protected documents. Most books in online book stores such as Kindle, iBookstore, Nook, etc. have DRM protection. Removing DRM is technically possible, but will violate your contract with the 3rd party providing the ebook.
  • Make sure the file is not too large. If your file is greater than the maximum size allowed (10MB for free accounts, 100MB for payed accounts) the file will not load.
  • Some books in Bookshare library are unavailable for download but are listed in Capti. You can tell those books apart from the accompanying icon. Which Bookshare books are available to you depends on your Bookshare account.

A document I added to the playlist doesn't looks right

  • If you are trying to add a PowerPoint document, try saving it as PDF first.
  • If you are adding PDF in "Original Layout" format it may not work perfectly with some complex files.
  • If you are taking a photo then try retaking it under better lighting conditions.

A webpage is not loading into the Playlist

  • While Capti can intelligently process most web pages, we occasionally find one that does not work as expected.
  • If you used Capti Bookmarklet to add an article that stretches across multiple webpages, only the text from the current webpage will be added. To add multi-page articles use Capti app on the AppStore.

How do I add a photo of text to Capti?

  • Make sure that Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is enabled for your account. If it is enabled you will find "Camera" and "Photo Library" items listed in the "Add Tracks" screen in iPhone / iPad. If it is not enabled please wait until we enable it for you (we are rolling this feature out slowly).
  • If you are taking a photo and the text in the Photo is not recognized or the image doesn't looks right then try retaking the photo with better ambient light. The paper should be well illuminated for this to work. If you are photographing a glossy paper then make sure the camera flash is off.

Bookmarks that I added to my PDF file are not displayed in Capti

If you added bookmarks outside of Capti then Capti will not be able to recognize them.

Images in a track are not displayed

  • You may be not connected to the Internet (only track text can be displayed offline)
  • You may have opened a track that was created from a webpage; this functionality is not yet supported
  • You may not have the premium account, which is necessary to view images in tracks
  • You haven't been subscribed to the premium account at the time the track was added to Capti. If you have premium account now, you can add the track again.
  • The original document has to be in PDF, DOC, DOCX, or EPUB formats to see images

AirDrop is not working

  • The minimum requirements for AirDrop to work are: iPhone 5, iPad (4th generation), iPad mini, and iPod Touch (5th generation).
  • You need to turn AirDrop on: swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal Control Center, tap AirDrop then tap Everyone (if you are only sharing with people in your contacts tap Contacts Only instead).
  • Both devices need to be signed into an iCloud account. To set up iCloud exit Capti, then go to iPhone Settings → iCloud.
  • For now Capti AirDrop support extends only to tracks loaded from webpages

Language Aids

Can I look up definitions of words in my language?

If your language is English then yes! To look up definitions in English right-click on a word and select "Define". We are looking into expanding into other languages. Capti will intelligently define phrases from your text even if you select only a part of a phrase.

Can I look up translation of words to / from my language?

Most likely yes! To look up a translation right-click on a word some selected text and select "Translate". Capti can translate from 26 and into 104 different languages. Capti will intelligently translate phrases from your text even if you select only a part of a phrase.

Can I create my own dictionary?

Not yet. We are working on it!

Is Capti using Google Translate?

Capti is using advanced natural language processing algorithms to determine part of speech of the word you selected and to determine if the word is a part of a larger phrase. We use this information to look up translations and definitions in our own database, and sometimes in Google Translate. As a result our translations and definitions are much more contextually accurate than if using Google Translate on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I want to listen instead of reading from the screen?

Today, we are drowning in the amount of reading materials both for work and pleasure. We spend ungodly hours staring at digital screens every day, and, even on the go, we often feel the urge to read from the small screens of smart-phones. Capti frees you from the screen, and enables you to listen to the news during your commute, documents when exercising at the gym, online books while relaxing on the couch; and you may find Capti useful for listening to other content in various situations.

How do I listen to content with Capti?

To listen to content you need to:

  1. Install Capti Voice app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch (available on the AppStore) or on Windows/Mac (available on our www.captivoice.com).
  2. Add the content you want to read to Capti Playlist.
  3. Open the Playlist and start playback.

What can I read with Capti?

Adobe PDF (.pdf), Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx), Plain and Rich text (.txt, .rtf), EPUB books (.epub), OpenDocument (.odt, .odp), DAISY books (.zip)

Will I have access to my Premium Plan on all my devices?

Yes. It doesn't matter if you sign up for a Premium Plan on iPhone, iPad, Windows, or Mac.

This is such a powerful app, why is Capti free?

We want everyone to benefit from the ability to listen to content, so we made Capti absolutely free with no hidden fees. However, for those who wish to enhance their experience with Capti, we offer optional upgrades for a nominal fee; for example, you can choose from a wide selection of naturally sounding voices, the best voices available on the market.

Do I have to buy Capti voices for each of my devices separately?

Voices purchased on iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad become available on all those devices. Voices purchased on Windows or Mac become available on up to 3 of your devices. If you reinstall Capti or get a new device, you will be able to restore the purchased voices free of charge.

Can I use a purchased voice on my other devices?

  • If you purchased a voice on an iOS device you will be able to use it on all your iOS devices, but not Windows, Mac, or Linux.
  • If you purchased a voice on Windows you can install and use it on up to 3 of your Windows devices. Same rule applies to a voice purchased on a Mac computer. If you exceeded the limit of 3 devices you can go to AccountDevices and delete record of old devices you are no longer using.
  • You can't access your purchased voices through our website because voices have to be installed on your device before they can be used. To gain access simply download and install Capti.

Why do I need to validate my e-mail address?

Your security and privacy is very important to Charmtech! E-mail validation helps us protect your data and prevent fraud.

Will Capti work on: Android, Kindle, Windows, etc.?

Capti is currently available for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad (iPhone Apps section) devices, as well as Windows and Mac computers; we are working on adding support for Android and other platforms.
